Unternehmen nehmen oft Risiken auf sich, obwohl sie nicht wissen, wie diese Risiken zu managen und zu steuern sind. Dabei werden oft unnötige Risiken eingegangen, bei denen das Potenzial für Gewinne genauso hoch ist wie das für Verluste. So kann z.B. ein Unternehmen mit hohem Exportanteil und Fremdwährungssätzen auf die Preisschwankungen am Devisenmarkt mit der Gründung einer Devisenhandelsabteilung reagieren. Das Unternehmen kann es aber wegen mangelnder Kompetenz und Erfahrungen auch unterlassen, da die zusätzlichen Kosten, die dadurch entstehen, die Vorteile nicht rechtfertigen würden.
Ein Unternehmen muss also wissen, wo sich seine Kernrisiken befinden und wie diese Risiken effizient zu managen und zu steuern sind, um so einen Wettbewerbsvorteil gegenüber anderen Unternehmen zu erhalten und höhere Renditen realisieren zu können.
Die Autoren zeigen, wie beim strategischen Risikomanagement die Kernrisiken definiert, gemessen und in die Unternehmenssteuerung integriert werden können. Dabei legen sie besonderen Wert auf die Integration der rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen.
